The GOPR Krynica Group (Grupa Krynicka GOPR) is one of the seven regional groups of the Polish Mountain Volunteer Rescue Service. Its Central Station is in the spa town of Krynica-Zdrój. The group rescues people in the Sądecki Beskids and the western Low Beskids, has modern vehicles and rescue equipment, runs mountain-safety training and cooperates with rescuers in neighbouring countries, including Ukraine and Slovakia.

How to call for help

The best way is the free Ratunek app, which gives the rescuers your location straight away. Without the app, dial the short number 985 or the 24/7 GOPR number; the group also publishes direct numbers of the duty rescuer in Krynica (all numbers below). With a weak signal, dial 112. Say where you are and what happened, how many people are hurt and how badly, and give a call-back number. Don't hang up first and keep your phone on.

Area and stations

The group's area is the Sądecki Beskids (Beskid Sądecki) with the Radziejowa, Jaworzyna Krynicka and Leluchów ranges, and the western Low Beskids (Beskid Niski) with the Hańczowa and Magura ranges and the Grybów Mountains. Stations and points according to the official GOPR map:

  • Central Station in Krynica-Zdrój;
  • Piwniczna district station;
  • field stations Jaworzyna Krynicka, Przehyba and Magura Małastowska;
  • field points Krempna and Folusz;
  • Słotwiny ski station.

Good to know

  • In winter the group provides cover on the Krynica ski slopes; it also secures sports and mass events.
  • The Radziejowa and Leluchów ranges approach the Slovak border: on the Slovak side the HZS carries out rescues and charges for them.
  • The Low Beskids are wooded and sparsely populated — tell someone your route and return time, and save your phone battery.
  • If you witness an accident, don't leave the injured person alone: one person stays while another calls for help.

Official apps

  • Ratunek — Free official app for calling the Polish mountain (GOPR, TOPR) and water rescue services: while dialling 601 100 300 it automatically sends an SMS with your exact location (to about 3 m). Install it before you set out.

Is the rescue free

According to TOPR, rescue in the Polish Tatras and in the other Polish mountains is free of charge. If you fall or stray onto the Slovak side of the border, however, the Slovak HZS carries out the rescue and charges for it, so insurance covering helicopter rescue is advisable on border trails.
