About

The Markowe Szczawiny Hut stands on a small glade on the northern slopes of Babia Góra in the Żywiec Beskids, at 1,180 m, inside Babia Góra National Park. The glade takes its name from a former owner, one Marek from Zawoja, and from the alpine dock that still grows thickly where sheepfolds once stood.

The Tatra Society opened the first hut here on 15 September 1906, the first Polish hut in this part of the Beskids. The old building was pulled down in 2007, and on 21 November 2009 a new one opened: a two-storey brick house faced with stone, with 40 beds, a dining room, self-catering kitchen and drying room, and adapted for disabled visitors. Next door are a GOPR rescue station and a small museum of mountain tourism history.

Most of the park's trails meet here: blue from Krowiarki pass, green from Zawoja Markowa, black from Ryżowana, yellow via Perć Akademików and red over Przełęcz Brona to Diablak. Mountain rescue: 985 or +48 601 100 300.
