About
Chatka Puchatka is the highest building in the Bieszczady, standing on Połonina Wetlińska below the top of Hasiakowa Skała at about 1,228 m. Its name was coined by the Polish sailor Leonid Teliga.
The army built it after the Second World War as a border guard observation post. PTTK took it over in 1956, and from 1967 it ran as a staffed year-round hut with 20 places in two dormitories and no running water or electricity. In 2015 a court awarded the building to Bieszczady National Park. In spring 2020 a complete rebuild began, in fact a new building, which opened on 24 September 2022 without overnight accommodation. It now has rainwater tanks, a sewage plant and toilets, a seasonal GOPR post, a weather station and a park ranger base.
The red Main Beskid Trail between Smerek and Brzegi Górne passes the hut; the yellow trail comes up from Przełęcz Wyżna and another from Wetlina. Mountain rescue: 985 or +48 601 100 300.
