The first mention of the village of Veldizh appears in the first lustration in (1469). Fyodor Chalgansky, in return for the village of Velsdich, which was donated to him, undertook to maintain three crossbowmen and healthy horses. Back then, iron ore was actively mined in this region. In those days, the Russian principalities were divided into counties, and Velsdizh belonged to the Zhydachiv county.

The tax register of 1515 documents a mill and 5 fields (about 175 hectares) of cultivated land in the village. In 1648, the villagers took an active part in the popular uprising, for which they faced a bloody massacre after Khmelnytsky's departure.

The rich forest (trees, mushrooms, berries, animals), iron ore mining, and salt production (nearby in Dolyna) contributed to the development of this region. In the XVIII century, the Gotlieb factory was built in Veldiz, which produced a wide range of metal products. These included shovels, axes, wheel rims, plows, mowers, etc. The factory existed until 1930. There was also a shop in the village of Zhaklia, where iron shearing machines were manufactured.

In 1939, the village was home to 2910 residents (1890 Greek Catholic Ukrainians, 600 Poles, 50 Roman Catholic Ukrainians, 320 Jews, and 50 Germans and other nationalities).

On June 7, 1946, by a decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Ukrainian SSR, the village of Veldizh, Vyhid district, was renamed Shevchenkove.
