Data & licences

Karpaty.Rocks combines its own texts and photos with open data. This page explains where our trails, elevations, maps and images come from, which licences we use them under and how to obtain our derived data.

Trails, springs and huts — OpenStreetMap

Hiking trail lines, waymarks, water springs, huts and shelters come from OpenStreetMap. This data is © OpenStreetMap contributors and is available under the Open Database License (ODbL) 1.0.

  • Every trail page shows «Route data: © OpenStreetMap contributors (ODbL)» under the map.
  • GPX files carry «OpenStreetMap contributors» as the author in their metadata, plus links to the ODbL and to the OpenStreetMap relation.
  • Found a mistake in a trail line or a spring? The best fix is right in OpenStreetMap — it reaches us with the next update. Or tell us via the contact form.

ODbL derivative database — on request

Our trail database (OpenStreetMap geometry and tags together with computed fields: length, elevation profile, country, region) is a derivative database under the ODbL. We make it available to anyone under the same ODbL 1.0.

To get a copy, write to [email protected] with the subject «ODbL». We will send a current file (GeoJSON or GPX) within 30 days, free of charge.

Our own trail descriptions, photos, accommodation listings and other content are not part of that database and are not licensed under the ODbL.

Elevation — Copernicus DEM

Elevation profiles, ascent and descent, and the highest and lowest points are computed from the Copernicus DEM GLO-30 digital elevation model (about 30 m grid), which we keep on our own server. The profile is sampled every 25 m and smoothed so that small model noise does not inflate the ascent. Some older trails still have profiles calculated earlier; we are recalculating them step by step.

Photos

Some photos of springs, huts, peaks and sights come from Wikimedia Commons. The author and licence (mostly CC BY or CC BY-SA) are shown under each such photo with a link to the original. Accommodation photos are provided by the owners; the rest are our own.
