Bastion Fortress Gallery – Ukrainian makers’ shops, Ivano-Frankivsk

Ivano-Frankivsk, Ivano-Frankivsk region, Ukraine

The Bastion Fortress Gallery is one of the most atmospheric places in Ivano-Frankivsk for an unhurried walk and for finding gifts made in Ukraine. The gallery occupies the inside of St Andrew’s Bastion — the only one to survive from the mighty Stanyslaviv fortress. It was built in the second half of the 17th century to designs by the military engineers François Corassini and Karol Benoit; once eight such bastions ringed the town. After reconstruction, a long covered arcade appeared under the brick vaults, where shops, art displays, an exhibition hall and a restaurant now sit side by side, while the square in front of the bastion hosts city festivities.

Why visit the Bastion

It is a kind of “shopping quarter” under one roof: in half an hour you can browse several shops of Ivano-Frankivsk brands and makers without leaving the historic walls. Along the arcade you will see wrought-iron sculptures, models of old Stanyslaviv and paintings by local artists, and the exhibition gallery regularly changes its shows — from watercolours to documentary photography. Every May the square of the gallery hosts a blacksmiths’ festival, when smiths from various regions forge in the open air, and on Vyshyvanka Day locals gather here in embroidered clothes. Inside the bastion it stays cool even in summer heat, and there are plenty of benches to rest on.

Which shops to look for

  • CHERNIKOVA — the shop of designer Liubtsia Chernikova: contemporary embroidered shirts, dresses, corsets, sheepskin-style vests and silk scarves with original ornaments.
  • Gaptuvalnya — an Ivano-Frankivsk fashion brand with goldwork and white-on-white embroidery; collections on linen and velvet with Galician motifs.
  • Skarbnytsia Vyshyvanok and Etnoodiah Tradytsiia — embroidered shirts, dresses and festive ethnic wear.
  • Art salon — paintings of Ivano-Frankivsk cityscapes, wrought-iron work, black-smoked Havarechchyna ceramics, items by Ukrainian craftspeople and gift wrapping.
  • Shops for creative hobbies — Scrap Time (art supplies), Monpacie (beads and findings), plus Faino Etno Style and other small ethno boutiques.

Tenants change from time to time, so individual shops may move; the ethno-fashion brands and the art salon are the most established.

Tradition in an urban format

Prykarpattia is a land of embroidery, pottery, blacksmithing and woodcarving. The Bastion shows how these crafts live on in a modern city: designers reinterpret old ornaments, potters continue the Havarechchyna black-ceramics tradition, and blacksmiths gather by the fortress walls every year. Shopping here supports local makers and doubles as a short tour of Stanyslaviv’s history. Look out for the details — the old brick of the vaults, the loopholes and the plaques with historical notes — and you will feel that you are walking inside a genuine fortification.
