Ortus craft and souvenir shop, Ivano-Frankivsk
Ortus is a small but densely packed shop of craft products and souvenirs in the very heart of Ivano-Frankivsk, at 9 Mykhaila Hrushevskoho Street. It is easy to find: the shop sits right across from the well-known Desiatka beer club and bistro, on the corner with Shashkevycha Street, a few minutes’ walk from the Town Hall. Behind the old doors of an Art Nouveau building you find a space full of things made not on a conveyor belt but by the hands of Ukrainian makers — from ceramics and stained glass to natural treats and craft drinks. The owners say their aim is to promote small-scale craft production and show everyday things in an unexpected, creative light.
Why drop into Ortus
This is the place for anyone who wants to take home from Ivano-Frankivsk not a factory fridge magnet but an object with character. The shelves are lined with author ceramics — black-smoked jugs and mugs, playful ceramic figurines and bells, ornamented plates. Next to them are stained-glass pendants, candles of natural waxes in many scents, wax melts and ceramic aroma lamps, embroidered tote bags, handmade jewellery and wooden lamps. One wall is given over to painting: you can buy views of old Stanyslaviv–Ivano-Frankivsk and the Carpathians, so you can take home a picture of the city you have just fallen for. Visitors admit in reviews that popping in “just to look” and leaving empty-handed is nearly impossible.
What to taste and buy
The other half of Ortus is about food and drink. The shop sells craft beer from small Ukrainian breweries, Carpathian herbal balsams and fruit liqueurs, herbal teas, spices, mountain honey and comb honey, and honey sweets. Behind the staircase hides a “secret” tasting room where you can try local drinks and products and then buy your favourites for yourself or as gifts. The tasting format is agreed in advance by phone. Seasonal items appear throughout the year — didukh sheaves and Christmas décor in winter, honey sets in August, Easter gifts in spring. That makes Ortus equally good for gift hunting and for a short gastronomic pause during a walk around the centre.
Tradition and local makers
The Prykarpattia region has long been famous for its crafts: pottery, embroidery, woodcarving, wool and leather goods. Ortus continues this line in an urban format, bringing together contemporary makers who reinterpret tradition. Alongside Hutsul motifs you will find thoroughly modern things — stained glass, natural cosmetics, designer décor. This mix makes the shop interesting both for travellers and for locals looking for something special for their homes.
