Hutsulske Brewery, Mykulychyn

Mykulychyn, Ivano-Frankivsk region, Ukraine

The Hutsulske brewery in Mykulychyn is one of the oldest private breweries in the Carpathians, brewing beer for more than twenty years right on the road between Yaremche and Tatariv. The story began in 2000, when local man Vasyl Motruk bought a plot of land and found on it a stone beer cellar dating from 1878 — an underground room where beer was matured and stored back in Austro-Hungarian times. “We have the cellar, now we just have to brew the beer,” is how the family explains its start. In 2002 a brewery was built over the old vault, and today three generations of the Motruk family run the business.

Why visit the brewery in Mykulychyn

This is a place where you can not only buy fresh craft beer in the Carpathians but also see how it is made. The brewery runs production tours, which are booked separately by phone. In the brand shop on the ground floor, beer is filled straight from the tanks into bottles of different sizes, so it is easy to take some on a hike or home. On the first floor of the building is the Pyvnytsia restaurant, opened for the brewery’s 20th anniversary in 2022, where beer is served directly from the brewery. For anyone touring the Carpathians by car or train it is a convenient stop: the brewery stands by the main road and has parking next to it.

What to taste and buy

Under the Hutsulske brand the brewery makes several styles: light, dark, wheat, honey, saffron, berry and rye, as well as an alcohol-free light beer and rye kvass. The honey beer is brewed with honey from the family’s own apiary, while the rye beer has won the “Beer Festival” (Sviato Pyva) competition more than once, including the Grand Prix in 2018. The beer is unfiltered and unpasteurised: the wort ferments for about a week and then matures for another two weeks. Four kinds of malt, two types of hops and Carpathian spring water go into the brew.

  • draught and bottled beer and kvass;
  • cheese — the family has its own cheese dairy with a summer mountain pasture;
  • meat from its own smokehouse and home-baked bread;
  • gift sets, which can also be ordered for delivery within Ukraine.

Brewing in the Carpathians has a long history: in Austro-Hungarian times small breweries worked in mountain towns, and underground cellars like the one in Mykulychyn served as natural refrigerators. The Motruk family deliberately combines that tradition with Hutsul flavours — herbs, honey and berries.
