Honey House Tasting Hall, Mukachevo

Mukachevo, Zakarpattia region, Ukraine

The Honey House (Medovyi Dim) is one of the first honey tasting halls in Zakarpattia. It was opened in Mukachevo in 2010 by beekeepers Liudmyla and Viktor Peresta as part of the region's honey tourist route. Since then the small house on Stara Street has welcomed families with children and tour groups alike: it smells of beeswax and herbs, and honey here is not just bought but tasted slowly, comparing one variety with another.

What awaits you

The hall holds a collection of honey from more than 60 countries. The owners are particularly proud of a map of Ukraine laid out in honeycomb and a glass observation hive where you can watch live bees and hear their quiet hum; they are most active in summer. Visitors can put on a beekeeper's suit, take a smoker and hive tool and look into a real hive for a few minutes. Entry to the hall itself is free.

Honey tasting in Mukachevo

The highlight is a tasting at a laid table with a talk about the life of bees, a beekeeper's work and the benefits of bee products. There are two formats:

  • Adult tasting — three natural honeys that differ in colour, aroma and flavour; three honey drinks (mead and honey balm made on site); bee pollen.
  • Children's tasting — three honeys, three creamed honeys with berries and pollen served in a child-friendly way.

The programme lasts 1–1.5 hours for groups of 8 to 24 people and costs UAH 280 per person. Tastings are by prior booking only, so agree the date and time by phone in advance; a small party may be offered a place in another group.

You learn to tell forest honey from flower honey, delicate acacia from darker, stronger varieties, why honey crystallises and how to spot a fake. Children see where honey comes from, while adults discover what makes honey from Transcarpathian meadows and mountain pastures special.

What to buy

The shop sells honey from the family apiary (including white acacia honey), creamed honey with raspberry, blackcurrant, strawberry or chocolate, pollen and bee bread, propolis products, beeswax candles, honey soap, mead, honey balm and gift sets — a tasty souvenir from Zakarpattia.

Beekeeping tradition in Zakarpattia

The warm valleys of Zakarpattia, with their acacia groves, lime trees and herb-rich mountain meadows, have long been famous for honey. Beekeeping is a family craft passed down through generations, and white acacia honey is one of the region's signature products. The Honey House presents this tradition in a simple, friendly way.
