Kosiv Museum of the Liberation Movement of the Carpathian Region

Founded in 1999, the museum is a historical and educational center; since 2004, it has been a part of the state museums of Ukraine, and since 2006, it has been a branch of the regional museum. On March 11, 1999, according to the decision of the V session of the Kosiv District Council, the Museum of the Liberation Struggle of the Carpathian Region was established in cooperation with the district organization of the Congress of Ukrainian Nationalists.

The Museum of the Liberation Struggle in Kosiv is located in a two-story building with classical palace-style architecture. The building dates back to the late 19th and early 20th centuries, intended for the family of a wealthy landowner. After the Second World War, the building was put at the disposal of the local administration, and a few decades later a museum of the liberation movements of the Carpathian region was opened in it.

The museum gallery has a large number of authentic exhibits collected over the years of the nationalist struggle against the occupiers. The main exhibition is dedicated to the 20-50s of the 20th century, when secret meetings of the liberation forces were organized in underground shelters. One of these places is recreated in detail within the walls of the museum. An example of a partisan forest building made of wood and camouflage materials was built here. Guests can also look at the living conditions of the insurgents, their equipment, photographs of heroes, hundreds of books, documents and other exhibits that tell the viewer about the details of the liberation struggle in Prykarpattia. Nearby is another interesting museum with an unusual exhibition - the Strypko Ceramics Museum, whose gallery will not leave indifferent the most demanding visitor.

The exposition with special lighting and sound effects provides information about historical events in Ukraine, Hutsul and Kosiv regions since 1920: the revival of Ukrainians, World War II, the UPA army, repression of civilians and the liberation struggle until 1954. The museum's total collection includes 1,440 exhibits, and the library collection includes 569.

The museum's thematic exhibition covers the time period of the 20s-50s of the twentieth century and highlights the glorious pages of the creation of Ukrainian statehood: the heroic struggle of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army, the activities of the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists, the struggle against the occupation regimes - Polish, German, Bolshevik, and the regime's repression of Ukrainian patriots.

The exhibition is based on materials collected by Daria Koshak, a member of the Ukrainian Resistance Movement, and her comrades-in-arms, materials from the Yavoriv UPA photo archive, exhibits, and documents donated to the museum by other concerned people.

The founders, including the district council with budgetary support, student artists from the Institute of Applied and Decorative Arts, veterans of the district UPA brotherhood, and employees of the Ivano-Frankivsk Museum of the Liberation Movement of the Carpathian Region, made a significant contribution to the creation of the exhibition.

The main task of the museum is to preserve the memory of the true history of the liberation struggle of the Ukrainian people, not distorted by Soviet ideology, and to foster patriotism in modern Ukrainian youth. To this end, the museum has a small library, which is open to everyone. Thousands of visitors, including children from all over Ukraine, have visited the Kosiv Museum.

The museum keeps a book of memory of the victims of repression with the names of all the victims. According to the Cabinet of Ministers' resolution of 2006, the museum belongs to the state funds of museums in Ukraine and is a branch of the Ivano-Frankivsk Museum of the Liberation Struggle of the Carpathian Region.

The museum plans to finalize and expand the existing exhibition and create an exposition on the glorious pages of the Sich Riflemen, the dissident movement and the history of Kosovo.

The museum is open from 9.00 to 18.00, with a day off on Sunday. Lunch break is from 13.00 to 14.00.
