Chumalovo is a village in Ukraine, in the Transcarpathian region, Tyachiv district, with a population of over 3000 inhabitants. According to legend, the name of the village comes from the surname of its first inhabitant Chumal: in the early 14th century, he escaped from a feudal lord from Uhlya and settled here, on the right bank of the Tereblya River (Talabor in Hungarian). According to the Hungarian historian V. Beloy, the right-bank part of the area where the Tereblya runs down from the mountains and opens into a wide valley was settled around 1350. According to historical records, in 1406, the settlement of Chumalovo (known in Hungarian as Csománfalva) already had 12 households. On the eastern outskirts of the village, the Stanovets River flows into the Tereblya.
The first settlements of Chumalivtsi appeared in the Zaberezh tract, i.e. in the western part of the present territory of the village, on the hill. In ancient times, the bank of the Tereblya River ran along the tract, along the edge of the relief border formed by nature itself. This is evidenced today by the structure of the soil and the character of the area. In later times, the river moved to the east and now flows midway between the villages of Chumalovo and Krychevo.
The first statistical information about Chumalovo dates back to 1839. Back then, the village was part of the Khust district of the Maramor Ruthenia, with a population of 621 people. In 1901, Chumalovo already had 1394 inhabitants, and at that time it already belonged to the Tyachiv district of the Maramoroska Ruthenia.
In 1939-1940, 78 young men and women illegally moved to the USSR from Chumalovo. The Hungarian fascist occupiers, cracking down on the rebellious population, imprisoned 27 and deported 83 villagers to hard labor. Chumalovo was liberated from the Nazi occupiers by the 17th Guards Rifle Corps under the command of Major General A. Hastylovych on October 23, 1944. On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of Soviet power, an obelisk of Glory was erected in the village to honor the volunteer villagers who died during World War II.
In 1878, a parochial elementary school was opened in Chumaliv, with children born in 1870-1871 entering the first grade. The first teacher was a Hungarian by the name of Lichtei. The village was liberated from the Nazi occupiers by the Red Army in 1944, and in 1945 the new government opened a seven-year school in Chumaliv, which became an eight-year school in 1961. It was only since 1991 that the village's students began to receive basic secondary education in the school of the first and second levels, which was reorganized into a secondary school of the first and third levels in 2001.
As for the spiritual life of the village, the church statistics for 1893 read as follows about the village of Chumalovo: "Chumalovo is an ancient village and church community. The church parish of this village is part of the Tereblya ecclesiastical district. The parish has a stone church of the Intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, which was consecrated in 1878."
In 1925, a separate Orthodox community was established in the village, with Vasyl Krailo as its priest. And in 1929, a monastic monastery, the Holy Ascension Monastery, began its spiritual activity; the first abbess was Maria Rybar from Dubove. There are no other religious denominations here, except for the Orthodox.
