Putyla (old names - Storonets-Putyliv, Putyliv) is an urban-type settlement in Bukovyna. It is located on the Putylka River in the Hutsul region, within the Verkhovyna-Putylska lowlands (Ukrainian Carpathians). One of the eleven district centers of the Chernivtsi region. The village of Putyla was formerly called Putyliv, Storonets-Putyliv, Putyla-Storonets. It lies on the Putyla River. The word putyla means "way", "path", "stream".

Putyla is a small town that is not only the administrative center of the district of the same name, but also the heart of the Bukovyna Carpathians. It is a land of tall fir and spruce trees, with about 63% of the territory covered by forests! It is here that many unique untouched places in nature have been preserved. There is a branch of the Chernivtsi State Literary Museum named after Yuriy Fedkovych (a native of Putyla) in Putyla. The XXI International Hutsul Festival was held here on September 6-8, 2013. In June 2015, a newly built church of the Holy Spirit was consecrated in Putyla. Metropolitan Danylo officiated at the consecration of the church and the hierarchical service. Construction of the church began in the 1990s.

Putyla was first mentioned in 1501, along with other settlements, which the Polish king gave to Ion Teutul for making peace between Poland and Moldova. In 1817, the peasants of Putyla complained to Emperor Franz II that taxes had increased tenfold in 10 years. In 1843, the peasants were forbidden to use the forest, which led to riots in Putyla. One of the leaders of the popular uprisings was Lukian Kobylitsa. In 1843, 14 leaders of the popular uprisings were arrested, including Lukian Kobylitsa, Ivan Halytsia, and Yosyp Byrlu.

Rest in Putyla

On the way, you should first have a bite to eat. Cafes, restaurants, and kolybas serve delicious Ukrainian and Hutsul dishes. You will be pleasantly surprised by the local hospitality. Among Hutsul dishes, I recommend trying kulesha, brynza, goulash, mochenka, Hutsul taystra, and mushrooms in sour cream. Let's move on...

Putyla doesn't have many attractions, but they definitely have a close connection with history. Moreover, they are something special for the Hutsuls, and that's why Hutsuls honor them sacredly. On the way to Putyla, be sure to pay attention to such natural and historical sights as the Nimchych Pass at the entrance to the Putyla district, the frog stone in the village of Marynychi, the cave of Oleksa Dovbush in the village of Petrashi (where, according to legend, Oleksa, hiding from the Nazis, hid gold and other goods taken from the rich. No one has ever found that property), the Stone Rich Woman rock in the village of Ust-Putyla (this is the name given by the Hutsuls to a wealthy landowner who refused a poor peasant woman's request for bread and cursed her), the Three Chekists rock (a monument to three people who died in the fight against the UPA soldiers).

In Putyla, first of all, you should definitely visit the museum-estate of Yuriy Fedkovych. And not only because he did a lot for this region and Hutsuls are proud of their "Bukovyna nightingale", but also because it is here that you can get acquainted with traditional Hutsul clothes, furniture, dishes and many interesting household items, as you will rarely find this in the vast majority of houses in Putyla. Don't forget to drink water from the well located on the museum's territory. Fedkovych himself used to drink from it. It is believed that the water in the well gives strength, health, and strong energy. In 1886, the St. Nicholas Church was built near the Fedkovych Museum, which is the holiest place for the highlanders.

Let's move on... On the central square there is a monument to Yurii Fedkovych, and right next to it, across the masonry (bridge) near the House of Culture, in the park, there is a monument to the soldiers of World War II. You can sit on the benches there and even sometimes hear birds singing beautifully.

In the center of Putyla, there are quite original architectural monuments of the past centuries - the bank building and the building of the Forestry.

It is quite pleasant to walk along the embankment and admire the turbulent flow of the mountain river Putylka from the bridges. At the Karpaty stadium, you can watch football, talk to local Hutsuls, and admire nature. Near the Karpaty stadium there is a central park where you can sit on the grass and relax to the roar of the Putylka river.

Also, visit the Cheremosh National Park, which was created to preserve valuable natural sites. There are 44 species of rare plants, more than 120 species of vertebrates and 5 thousand invertebrates in the park.

If you have a desire to go skiing and sledding in winter, then you should go to Mount Procherk. You can also go horseback riding for an additional fee.

Famous places outside Putyla are the Black Dil reserve in the village of Serhii, Putyla district. Serhii village, Putyla district, the ecological and educational center of the Selyatyn forestry (where you can watch deer, wild boars, bears, martens, roes, eagles, foxes, hares, quails, hedgehogs from a fairly close distance) and a rather original museum of embalmed animals and birds in the village of Selyatyn and the Mountain Eye Lake near the village of Nyzhnii Yalivets.

Dear guests, be sure to visit the annual "Holiday of going out to the meadows". There, you will not only watch Hutsul folk performances and a festive program, but also have the opportunity to taste Hutsul dishes and drinks for free. So, I am sure that your trip to Putyla will be unforgettable. You will definitely feel how your inner state changes, your well-being improves and your wonderful trip is enriched with unique emotions.
