Museum-house of Ivan Franko's family, Kalush

The Ivan Franko Family Folk Museum is a museum dedicated to Ivan Franko and his family in the city of Kalush, Pidhirtsi residential area.

In 1996, a monument to Ivan Franko was erected in Pidhirtsi (architect Y. Chaika), and Onufriy Franko (1861-1913), the mason's brother, is buried here in the local cemetery.

The creation of the museum-house in Kalush was initiated by Onufriy Franko's granddaughter Oksana, Doctor of Historical Sciences and Professor at the Ivan Franko National University of Lviv, and her son Andriy, Candidate of Historical Sciences and a French scholar.

The museum was opened in 1992 on the basis of the decision of the Executive Committee of the Kalush City Council No. 126 of 14.06.1989.

The building was built in 1935 by the son of Ivan Franko's brother, Omelian Franko. There are four rooms in the museum-house. The first room tells about the life and work of Ivan Franko: photos of his childhood, student years, and the elderly years of the stonemason. A prominent place in this room is occupied by the family tree of the Franko family. The second room of the museum contains materials about Onufriy Franko's family in Pidhirtsi and the corner of the priest, poet and educator Antin Mohylnytskyi, whose work was highly appreciated by Ivan Franko. The things belonging to Onufriy Franko's family are striking in their beauty and originality. The last room is called "Ivan Franko and Smolsky". Paintings by the artist are exhibited here. Hryhorii Smolskyi left a memory of Ivan Franko, in particular, of the writer's visit to the funeral of his brother Onufriy in 1913.

The museum conducts search and research work, hosts teachers' seminars, Franko readings, children's readings, and exhibitions of decorative and applied arts. The museum took part in the project "Open Tourism: Accessibility of Recreation in Ivano-Frankivsk Region for People with Special Needs". Since January 3, 2012, it has been a part of the municipal institution "Museum and Exhibition Center of Kalush City Council".

Kalush is a city of regional significance, located in the northwest of Ivano-Frankivsk region (in the Boykivshchyna). The name of the city probably comes from the word "kalyusha" - a natural salt spring from which salt was extracted in ancient times.

One of the main advantages of the city is its favorable geographical location. A well-developed transportation network connects the city with Central Europe and the West via railways and highways. The highway network connects Kalush with other cities such as Lviv (130 km), Uzhhorod (280 km), and Kyiv (560 km). These and other cities are also connected to Kalush by rail. Within 300 km of the city are the borders with Poland (150 km), Hungary (300 km), Slovakia (300 km), and Romania (240 km), which provides easy access to Central and Eastern Europe.

At the exit to Kopanky, on the left, beyond the bypass channel of the Sivka River, there is a concrete strip of the former airfield, which is now used for racing and exhibitions. 30 km from Kalush, in the city of Ivano-Frankivsk, there is an airport capable of regularly receiving heavy transport aircraft (Boeing 767, Il-76, Il-86).

The city's territory consists of a flat part and Mount Vysoczanka (the district is named accordingly), named after the hero of the Opposition, Semen Vysoczan. The surface of the city is divided by the Limnytsia, Sivka, and Mlynivka rivers. One tenth of the city is covered with forests. The city is divided into industrial and residential zones. The residential zone consists of seven districts: two high-rise buildings - the Old Town and New Kalush and five cottage buildings - Banya, Vysoczanka, Zahiria, Pidhirky and Khotin; it has several bazaars: the new town - Piatachok and the large Barakholka bazaar, the old town - Rynok bazaar.
