Kolyba “Hariachyi Hutsul”, Synevyrska Poliana

Synevyrska Poliana, Zakarpattia region, Ukraine

Kolyba “Hariachyi Hutsul” (“The Hot Hutsul”) is a cosy kolyba-museum in Synevyrska Poliana, on the road to Lake Synevyr. You spot it from the road: a stone archway, a wooden fence hung with old farm tools, log cabins under red roofs and flowers everywhere in the yard. The name is playful – the Mizhhiria area is the highland part of Transcarpathia rather than the Hutsul region – but mountain hospitality is the same across the Carpathians. With more than 1,400 Google reviews averaging 4.6, it is often recommended as the place for a hearty lunch after the walk around the lake.

Inside it is a kolyba in the best sense: wooden walls and benches, embroidered runners on the tables, folk musical instruments on the walls and clay pottery on the shelves. In the middle of the hall stands a large grill with an open fire, especially welcome on cool days. In summer guests prefer the covered terrace with views of the mountains and forest.

What to try

The menu is home-style Transcarpathian and Ukrainian cooking with big portions. Don’t miss the bograch – a spicy meat soup praised in almost every review – and the trout fish soup. Other soups include porcini soup, “Polianska” solyanka and Ukrainian borshch with meat and sour cream.

  • banosh with cracklings and brynza or with mushrooms – the cornmeal porridge no Carpathian lunch is complete without;
  • potato pancakes with meat or mushrooms and sour cream, baked potatoes with salo and brynza;
  • porcini in sour cream, pancakes with meat or mushrooms;
  • the signature “Hot Hutsul” with home-made sausage and the “Shepherd’s snack” in a clay pot – potatoes, meat, ham, egg and hard cheese;
  • trout, shashlik and meat from the grill, pickles and sliced salo;
  • home-made infused spirits that guests especially thank them for, plus wine and hot herbal teas.

Atmosphere and experience

The main impression is that of being a guest in someone’s home. According to reviews, the owner himself often grills the meat dressed in traditional clothes, and the waiting staff are happy to tell you about the place and its dishes. It is called a museum for a reason: old objects, instruments and pottery form a small ethnographic display to look at while your order is being prepared. A yard full of flowers, a terrace with mountain views and the warmth of the fire make lunch part of the trip to Synevyr. Wi-Fi is available.
