Zakarpatski Delikatesy, Svaliava

Svaliava, Zakarpattia region, Ukraine

Zakarpatski Delikatesy (“Transcarpathian delicacies”) is a craft producer and shop in central Svaliava that gathers the flavours of the area under one label: Carpathian herbs, forest mushrooms, berries and fruit, plus home-made Transcarpathian wine. The brand is listed among Zakarpattia's craft producers on the region's official tourism portal, and its products went into the “Svaliava craft basket”, a set of local treats put together for visitors to the town. The shop also takes part in community life: for example, it co-hosted the charity event “Buy — play — help!” with the My Life Tree foundation.

Why drop in

Most travellers pass through Svaliava on the way to Poliana, Solochyn or the Borzhava ridge, and Zakarpatski Delikatesy is a handy chance to stop and pick up edible gifts in one place. The shop on Shevchenka Street, next to the post office, has shelves of wine, jams, teas, mushrooms and other local produce in a cosy interior hung with embroidered towels. Production tours are not advertised, but the shop itself is a small showcase of the Svaliava area where you can ask about the products and put together a gift set. This is especially handy if you travel by train or bus and have no time to hunt for produce in the villages: everything is under one roof in the town centre.

What to try and buy

  • herbal teas from Carpathian herbs;
  • fruit butter and jams from local fruit and berries, including bilberry and pine-cone jam;
  • spruce-shoot syrup and a nettle seasoning for borscht;
  • dried and pickled mushrooms, dried fruit and other “forest gifts”;
  • home-made wine, which has its own Instagram page (zakarpatske_vyno).

Svaliava is surrounded by beech and fir forests, so picking mushrooms, bilberries and medicinal herbs is part of family life. In autumn ceps are sold by the roadside, in spring young spruce shoots are gathered for syrup and nettles for green borscht, and in winter dried and pickled stores appear on the table. Craft producers turn these home traditions into jars that are easy to take home, packed in kraft bags and jars with the brand's seal. A good set is a pack of herbal tea, a jar of jam and a jar of pickled mushrooms; the range depends on the season.
