The museum was opened in 1995 in the village of Yasen, the birthplace of the prominent writer, ethnographer, and educator, a member of the "Russian Trinity" who published the almanac Rusalka Dnistrova in 1837.

The museum is located in a house that once belonged to the writer's family, near which a monument was erected in 1937 with the inscription: "To the awakeners of the Galician land, Fathers M. Shashkevych, J. Holovatsky, and I. Vahylevych in the age of The Mermaid of the Dniester." In the 70s of the last century the monument was rebuilt.

There are more than a thousand exhibits in five rooms. These are mainly printed publications, documentary materials donated to the museum by the Lviv Scientific Library named after V. Stefanyk, household items and pottery, clothes, and shoes that were once used by the Vahylevych family and residents of the writer's native village.

A separate stand is decorated with family photos of I. Vahylevych. The museum also has editions of the Rusalka Dnistrova almanac from different times and other books.

In a separate room, there are photos of the people of Yasen village who lived here and fought for a free and independent Ukraine.
