Honey & meaderies
Honey and meaderies of the Carpathians
Mountain meadows, lime, acacia, chestnut and forest herbs give Carpathian honey its distinctive taste. Beekeeping here often runs in the family for generations, and many beekeepers show visitors their hives, talk about the life of a bee colony and offer a tasting of several honeys.
At meaderies you can learn how mead and honey drinks are made, and some apiaries have beehive cabins where you rest above the hives. This is also where you buy comb honey, bee bread, propolis and wax straight from the person who harvested them.
Tip: the best time to visit apiaries is from May to September. If you are allergic to bee stings, tell the hosts in advance, and book tours by phone.
