Intercession Orthodox Church, Uzhhorod

The Church of the Intercession is an Orthodox church-monument in Uzhhorod (Pravoslavna embankment, 23)built in honor of Russian soldiers who died in World War I. It is the only church-monument in the former CIS countries in honor of soldiers who died in World War I.

The Uzhhorod Orthodox community was founded in 1921. In 1926, the community decided to build this church. In the mid-1930s, the number of members of the denomination reached 220. Its priest was Hieromonk Oleksii.

A Russian emigrant, civil engineer Talalayev, took part in the design of the church. The project was executed in the tent style of Moscow church building in the image of the Church of the Ascension in the village of Kolomenskoye near Moscow.

The construction was entrusted to Archpriest Vsevolod Kolomatsky, who already had experience in church building. The church was built in 8.5 months in 1930 at the expense of Russian immigrants and Princess Anastasia. This is a small copy of the church in Kolomna, Moscow Region.

The church functioned during the Hungarian occupation of 1938-1944 and partially during the Soviet period. In the mid-1950s, the church was turned into a warehouse, and in 1979 it was converted into the Museum of Atheism (closed in 1990). Today the church functions as part of the UOC-MP.
