The charming city of Chernivtsi, considered the cradle of Ukrainian culture, is located on the sprawling banks of the Prut River. For more than a century and a half, the ancient Chernivtsi City Hall has been reaching for the sky on Central Square.

The idea of building a city hall in Chernivtsi originated in the 1820s. It was built in 1843-1847 according to the project of German architect Adolf Martin, who convinced the city authorities of the need to build a town hall on the main square of Chernivtsi. The town hall was built on a fairly solid foundation, about six meters deep, and was originally used as a firehouse. During its long existence, the Town Hall in Chernivtsi has seen Austrian rulers, Russian officials, and Romanian occupiers.

Today, the building continues to be used for its intended purpose. It now houses the residence of the mayor and the Chernivtsi City Council.

The architecture of the building shows features associated with the departure from the principles of classicism and the transition to the Italian Renaissance: the facade is designed in the classical style, while the tower has Renaissance motifs. The original project planned to build a two-story tower, but later it was decided to build another additional floor.

A distinctive feature of the town hall is its two clocks.

  • One of them is a tower clock installed during the construction process.
  • The second one, located above the main entrance, was later donated by the mayor Anton Kokhanovskyi, who headed Chernivtsi from 1866 to 1892. He ordered this clock with a glowing dial at night in Prague and presented it to his beloved city.

Now the yellow and blue Ukrainian flag is flying on the tower's spire, and the facade is decorated with the city's coat of arms. The imposing building fits very harmoniously into the architectural ensemble, making the central part of the city a beautiful place.

Interesting facts

  • For many decades, firefighters kept order in the city from a high tower. As soon as a fire broke out somewhere, a red flag was hung out, and in the dark, a light was lit on the side where the misfortune occurred. Seeing such a sign, the locals understood where their help was needed.
  • Every day, a trumpeter in a Bukovinian folk costume climbs 126 steps up the 50-meter clock tower and performs the melody from the song "Marichka" from the balcony at 12:00 sharp, which has become unofficially known as the town's anthem. This tradition was started in 2004.

The City Hall in Chernivtsi is located on the Central Square, from which the main streets of the city diverge. To get there, you can use public transportation (for example, buses 7, 8, 10, 36, and others). From the railway station you can get there by bus 1A, trolleybuses 3A and 5.
