Nevitsky castle
Nevytsky Castle dates back to the twelfth century, and historical evidence suggests that in 1274 Nevytsky Castle had the status of a royal castle. It is located 12 km from Uzhhorod in the forest on a high mountain, which is washed by the Vaida stream. It was owned by Hungarian rulers. Time has not spared the majestic fortress, but it is being restored and the building is regaining its former grandeur. The castle's defenses include a wall with four towers, ramparts and a moat between them. The castle wall offers a magnificent view of the green valley of the Uzh River.
In March 1241, the Mongol-Tatars, who broke into Hungary through the Veretsky Pass, may have destroyed the Nevytsky Castle. Soon the fortifications were restored again. In 1248, one of the sources of that time already mentioned the "New Ung Castle". In 1322, the modern name of the fortress, Neuichke, was mentioned for the first time on the pages of historical documents (Charles Robert's charter). In 1644, György I Rákóczi, having conquered the castle, expelled the Drugetts from there, ordering the castle walls to be destroyed.
When in 1691 the Druget family's Uzhansky possessions passed into the hands of Count Miklovš Berčeni, he did not rebuild the Nevytsky castle, preferring to build the Uzhhorod fortress. In 1711, the castle became the property of the state, and only ruins remained of the mighty fortification. Until 1879, the monument stood forgotten and abandoned.
In 1902, it was allowed to restore the central castle tower. But during the First World War, Nevytsky Castle fell into disrepair and collapsed again. The castle is located between the two villages of Nevytske and Kamianytsia.
One of the oldest castles in Ukraine is shrouded in many legends. It used to be called the Bride's Castle. The construction of this building is attributed not even to the Hungarian nobility, but to a Russian princess. Allegedly, the fortress was built to protect brides. According to another version, young girls from noble families were buried in the impregnable fortress. At the foot of the mountain, where the castle is located, you can see a pillar of volcanic tuff - the Nevytsky Pillar. There is a legend that in the days of paganism, women who wanted to have children came to worship it.
