Museum of local lore
The museum complex is the largest in Chernivtsi region among public museums in terms of area, number and variety of antiquities and themes. Its exhibits most fully recreate the peasant life and culture not only of the Hlyboka district but also of the entire Bukovyna region. The museum was founded in 1957. Today, it contains more than 8,000 exhibits housed in 19 halls of the complex.
The museum is particularly proud of its large collection of Easter eggs (over 3,000) made by local craftsmen. Also noteworthy are woven household items, products of potters, coopers, carvers, embroiderers, and artists.
The memorial room of Leon Kopelman (1904-1982) and his graphics will be of great interest to art lovers. The section on tools (wooden products of the nineteenth century) has many rare exhibits. Among them, a hand thresher of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries and a hand straw chopper are noteworthy, being the only such exhibits in the region.
Separately, the exhibition presents a peasant hut of the first half of the twentieth century with a restored interior and original examples of Bukovyna embroidery. The collection of "Grandmother's Chests", antique wagons, and a collection of radio, television, and film equipment are also worthy of special attention.
For 50 years, Ivan Kasiyanovych Topalo and his fellow villagers have been collecting antiques that make up the museum's exposition. The search work is still ongoing.
Opening hours: 10:00-16:00; Saturday and Sunday - by prior arrangement.
