Monument to the 2000th anniversary of the birth of Christ, Ivano-Frankivsk

If you hear the phrase in Ivano-Frankivsk: "See you 'on the ramparts'," then stop looking for this place on the maps. This refers to Valova Street (between Hrushevskoho and Dnistrovska Streets), where there is a monument to the 2000th anniversary of the birth of Christ.

The "ramparts" are behind the former Potocki Palace. It used to be a military hospital. This place owes its interesting name to the Potocki princes. The peculiarity of the "ramparts" is that the relief gradually decreases from the center to the Bystrytsia River. In order to make the palace higher than the city center, the peasants were forced to fill the ramparts by hand. Behind the palace, the walls were visible. In the early 19th century, they were demolished. Their ruins can now be seen near the back right wall of the hospital.

During the time of Mayor Ignacy Kaminski, a square was laid out under the ramparts. It received a romantic name - "Hetman's ramparts". It was named in honor of the first rulers of Stanislaviv at the time, the crowned Polish hetmans.

During the tumultuous events of the early 20th century, a rally was held in the park on March 3, 1918. About 50 thousand local residents and peasants were counted. All these people swore allegiance to Ukraine.

In 1968, the park was again landscaped and a monument to the fighters for the establishment of Soviet rule was erected here. In the first years of independence, this "work of art" was dismantled. It turned out that it had been decorated with granite slabs from a Jewish cemetery, which had been prudently turned the other way.

The "ramparts" acquired their present appearance in 2001. The reconstruction of the park was connected with the celebration of the 2000th anniversary of Christmas.

In the same year, a monument to the 2000th anniversary of the birth of Christ was erected in the park. This artistic idea was realized by architects Volodymyr Syvenkyi and Petro Staier. The monument was unveiled on the Constitution Day of Ukraine on June 28, 2001.

Ivano-Frankivsk is a very compact city. Valova Street is easily accessible from Rynok Square. From the town hall you turn to Sheremety Street, then go to Shpytalna Street. And from there, you can reach your destination via Hrushevskoho Street.
