Monument to Adam Mickiewicz, Ivano-Frankivsk
Mickiewicz Square was formed in the 1870s and has never changed its name since. The square is valuable for the city in many ways. It is both a beautiful, tidy square and one of the most favorite places to relax, and there are many interesting attractions around the square.
The Monument to Adam Mickiewicz in Ivano-Frankivsk is a monument to the Polish poet Adam Mickiewicz (1798-1855) in the regional center of Ivano-Frankivsk; it is considered the oldest example of urban sculpture in the city.
The monument is located on Mickiewicz Square. It is a bronze figure of the poet, mounted on a marble pedestal roughly proportional to the size of the figure, which is stepped and complemented by a low stylobate. The sculptor Tadeusz Blotnicki depicted the poet with a book in his hands in a moment of inspiration.
All tourist excursions around the city necessarily stop at the monument to the great poet Adam Mickiewicz. In 1898, fans of Polish literature celebrated the 100th anniversary of the poet's birth (1798-1855). A decision was made to decorate the square named after Mickiewicz with a monument to him, although the poet had never even been to Stanislaviv. The Krakow sculptor T. Blotnicki won the competition for the monument. Work on the monument began in Florence in 1881. Donations in the amount of 3000 rynski were collected for the construction of the monument. Initially, it was planned to implement his project in Krakow, but the Austrian authorities did not agree to this. It was then decided to erect the monument in Stanyslaviv. A figure made of Italian marble appeared on the square; the poet is depicted with a book in his hands at the moment of inspiration.
The grand opening of the monument to Adam Mickiewicz in Stanisławów took place on November 20, 1898, in the presence of a large number of people. The words in Polish were engraved on the pedestal: "To Adam Mickiewicz on the centenary of his birth - citizens of Stanisławów. 1898".
In 1919, during the First World War, the monument was damaged. In 1930, it was cast in bronze, the shape of the pedestal was simplified, and the location was slightly changed.
In 1940, the Polish-language plaque on the pedestal was removed and replaced with a new one: "Adam Mickiewicz, 1798-1855". In this form, the monument has survived to this day on the square named after the great poet.
In 1989, the monument was reconstructed.
An important building can be seen just behind the monument. Now it is the regional music philharmonic, but the building was originally conceived and built as the theater of the S. Moniuszko Musical Society. It was built in 1891 on what was then Bielovskoho Street (now L. Kurbasa Street). The competition for the theater's architectural designs was won by... a city railroad engineer, Józef Lapicki. For this he received a golden ring from the city's public.
In 1939, the Ivan Franko Music and Drama Theater was housed here, and in 1980 it received new premises on Nezalezhnosti Street. By the way, the original building of the Philharmonic looked quite different from what it does now. This can be seen on old postcards of Stanislaviv.
There used to be two cultural and sports societies in the city called Sokil. One of them was Polish, and its building is now located on Mickiewicz Square and serves as the regional library for children. The Polish Sokil was built in 1895. In 1927, the building was damaged by fire. It is even said that the Poles deliberately set fire to their Sokil in order to obtain insurance and use it to rebuild the building. It is not known whether this is true, but in 1929 the Sokil was rebuilt and expanded; additionally, a building was constructed for the Ton cinema, which then became the first sound cinema in the city. Now the Lumiere cinema operates here.
