Museum "Nature of the Galician Land" of the Galician National Park

The idea of creating a natural history museum in Halych originated in 1998 during the celebration of the 1100th anniversary of the first written mention of this ancient city. In 1998-2003, natural history collections were formed in the National Reserve "Ancient Halych", and in 2004, during the celebration of the reserve's tenth anniversary, the exhibition "Nature of the Halych Land" was opened in the museum "History of Ancient Halych". It presented types of natural complexes in the form of 4 closed and one large open dioramas with 199 exhibits (187 species of animals) and occupied an area of 48 square meters.

In 2006, the museum was moved to the main estate of the Galician National Nature Park. Today the exposition is presented in three halls with a total area of 80 m2.

To get to the museum, you need to pass under the arch that symbolizes the gate to the "Temple of Nature" and is a copy of a natural arch of gypsum origin in the Zamok tract near the village of Podillia. Stepping into the softly lit hall of the museum, you find yourself in the realm of her majesty, Mother Nature. Dioramas, showcases, and stands present the Galician National Nature Park in miniature with its unique and typical natural complexes.

Tourists get acquainted with the history of the region's nature reserve business and the creation of the Galician National Nature Park in 2004.

The first hall is dedicated to the steppes, which are rare ecosystems in Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast, found only in its east. Attention is drawn to the diorama of the Kamen tract on the outskirts of the village of Mezhyhirtsi, skillfully made stuffed steppe birds and mammals, photographs, and herbaria of steppe plants. There are also paleontological and mineralogical collections. The diorama of the Pomyarky tract presents a composition of a brown bear and a forest cat, which were captured in the late twentieth century.

The tour moves from the steppe hall to the entomological gallery. There are four large display cases with insects. The first one has a variety of colorful butterflies and a huge collection of beetles. A special pride of the entomological collection is the steppe damselfly, which was caught in 2008 in the Kasova Hora tract (near Burshtyn) for the first time since Polish scientists saw it there in the early twentieth century!

The next is the hall of wetland ecosystems. Here, museum visitors get acquainted with the rich fauna and flora of the second largest river in Ukraine, the Dniester, the Burshtyn Reservoir, fish hatchery ponds, and numerous oxbows. Visitors are impressed by a diorama overlooking the Dniester, a large collection of stuffed water and wading birds, as well as their nests with eggs.

The biggest highlight of the museum is the forest ecosystem recreated in three dioramas. There is a huge old oak tree with many hollows - a multi-storey dwelling of forest animals: squirrels, dormice, martens, bats; birds: owls, woodpeckers; insects: wild bees, beetles. The young naturalists are once again convinced that there is nothing superfluous in wildlife and that they should remember this.

One of the dioramas recreates a summer forest with roes and badgers, numerous birds, whose singing is enjoyed by the tourists from the built-in loudspeakers. Another diorama with a giant wild boar and a small pig, birds - kingfisher, bullfinch, great hawk - reveals the winter landscape in the Verbivtsi tract in all its glory. Looking at the diorama, which depicts a fox with its brood, museum visitors have the opportunity to discuss the usefulness or harmfulness of such forest animals as foxes, wolves, badgers, martens, etc.

A special feature of the museum is that some of the exhibits were collected during the lifetime of Count Volodymyr Didushytskyi - some of them are already a century and a half old!

The Nature of the Galician Land Museum is located in a convenient location - on the route of the Krylos (former capital of the Galician-Volyn principality) - Starostynskyi Castle - Center of Halych tourist route - and attracts both locals and visitors. It is a powerful scientific base for students of natural sciences and schoolchildren in the region.

Visitors to the museum have the opportunity to understand the need to protect nature and use its resources sparingly. Here, everyone feels that the old approach to nature in an attempt to take as much as possible from it leads to the destruction of invaluable natural resources, which threatens not only nature but also the very existence of humanity. There is only one way out - to live in harmony with nature.

Opening hours: daily 9-16 hours.

On weekends and holidays: 10-15 hours.

The museum is included in the list of objects checked for accessibility for people with special needs.
