Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Boryslav

TheChurch of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary is a functioning Greek Catholic church in the city of Boryslav, Lviv region, on S. Bandera Street (Mraznytsia district). The church was built in November 1929.

In 1835, a small wooden church was built in the village of Mraznytsia (the southern part of the modern city of Boryslav) by the priest Mykhailo Vitoshynskyi. But before this construction, there was also a church on the same site. This is evidenced at least by an inscription on the beam of the church, which was found on May 31, 1928, and faithfully recorded by the parish priest, Fr. Ivan Lishchynsky: "That church was built before the year 1834, and this church was built in 1835, during the reign of the noble Mr. Ksenz Vitoshynsky, the parish priest from Boryslav in Mraznytsia (this inscription was on the beam of this church). On May 31, 1928, the church was dismantled under the pastor Fr. I. Lishchynskyi and transported with its iconostasis to the village of Kamenopil (Pidbirtsi parish) near Lviv. The previous church was to burn down. 31/5 1928. Fr. Lishchynskyi". The second piece of evidence is the icon of the Mother of God, which was transferred to the Drohobychyna Museum and which art historians date to the 16th century.

Theold wooden church was transferred to the Greek Catholic community of Kamianopilin 1928. The community built a new church in 1929, which operated until October 1962, and was later closed and used as a warehouse. On March 26, 1989, the church was reopened as a parish of the Russian Orthodox Church. Since February 1991, it has been a parish of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church.

Since 1989, the pastor of the Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary has been Archpriest Mykola Pyshkovych.

Construction began in June 1928, was completed in November 1929, and the rest of the work was completed in 1931. It was built under the supervision of the parish priest (church leader) Ivan Lishchynskyi, at the expense of local residents and owners of oil mines in Boryslav. Architects: Serhii Tymoshenko and Oleksandr Pezhanskyi. The church was built by engineer Lev Shelevych.

The church is built on a high plinth of Ternopil stone, the floor is paved with Czech tiles, the main pulpit is made of white Carrara marble, the church is decorated with four entrance columns made of white stone, and the church's domes are covered with copper tin. It is decorated with 10 artistic stained-glass windows designed by the famous artist Petro Ivanovych Kholodnyi Sr. and supervised by the poet, prose writer, and artist Bohdan Lepkyi. These stained-glass windows were realized by the then well-known company of S. Zhelenski in Krakow in 1929.

TheChurch of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary functioned until October 1962, and was later closed and used as a warehouse. On March 26, 1989, it was opened as the Russian Orthodox Church. Since February 1991, it has been the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church. The pastor is Rev. Mykola Pyshkovych.
