The sights of Mukachevo fascinate from the first minutes of your stay in this unofficial capital of tourism. By the way, on May 23, 2017, the name of the city was officially changed from Mukacheve to Mukachevo.

The city is located in the center of Zakarpattia and is the second largest city in the region after its administrative center, Uzhhorod. Mukachevo is a city of regional significance located 42 km from Uzhhorod. Most of Mukachevo's residential buildings are located on the left bank of the Latorytsia River. Mukachevo is divided into six districts, which are the former settlements of Rosvyhiv, Pidmonastyr, Palanka, Pidzamok, Pidhorod, and Mukachevo itself. The surrounding mountains are Halish, Lovachka, Chervona, Chernecha, Sorocha, Popova, Pavlova, and Velyka. The Chervona Hirka mountain on the outskirts of Mukachevo is the northernmost area in the world where tea was grown until a few years ago.

Mukachevo's interesting places are located on a flat plateau, and only the castle mountain rises majestically above the ancient streets. From the city center, walk 4 kilometers along the long Ilona Zrinyi Street to thePalanok Castle, which can be seen from anywhere, and the name of the city and its fate are associated with the fortress(from Monday to Saturday the castle is open from 9.00 to 18.00, on Sunday - until 23.00). The castle of the Schönborn family(16 Myr Square), with its original architectural style, is of great historical and architectural value, as well as the Mukachevo Town Hall.

The most famous historical monument of the city - the Church of St. Martin - is located on Myr Street (built in 1904 on the site of a burned large Catholic church). To the Mukachevo City Hall and the monument to the Chimney Sweep(chimney sweep Bertalon Tovt devoted more than 40 years to his profession), walk along Myr Street through Cyril and Methodius Square. Along the way, in the alley, you can turn to the Micah Munkacsy Art School, located in the historic building of the former Rakoczy Palace, built in the 17-18th centuries.

Every year in January, on the eve of St. Basil's Day, gourmets and connoisseurs of good collectible wine from Hungary, Slovakia, Poland, Romania, and other countries come here to attend the largest wine festival. Guests of the festival have the opportunity to taste and buy wines from private winemakers and well-known companies for free. In addition, the Red Wine Festival is also a real folk festival with carols, Christmas carols and gifts. Be sure to come, you will enjoy it.

  5. The Day of the patron saint of Mukachevo - St. Martin (November 11-12). The grand opening of St. Martin's Day takes place in the city center. The attributes of the holiday are lanterns and geese, and the first barrel of young wine is opened on this day. A children's procession with lanterns marches through the streets of Mukachevo. A theatrical performance retelling the legend of St. Martin, including its most famous episode, when Martin cut off part of his cloak and gave it to a beggar to keep him warm, is also organized, as well as a festive service in honor of the city's patron saint. The center has a "gastronomic" location with themed food, sweets and wine, and a traditional fair. A knight tournament. A spectacular fire show culminates the celebration. In honor of the holiday, in 2016, a stone was blessed on the central square of the city at the site of the future monument to St. Martin, and three themed sculptures were unveiled: a goose-photographer near the city hall, a goose-tourist on Dostoevsky Street, and a goose-brewer near the market. In 2017, in honor of the anniversary of the birth of St. Martin, a sculpture of St. Martin of Tours was installed in the courtyard of the Mukachevo Catholic Church at 2 Myr Street.

If you're traveling with a cheerful group, be sure to visit the Celtic Courtyard. "The Celtic Yard under the Lovachka is a tasting room. The city has the Mukachevo Drama Theater (1 Cyril and Methodius Square) and 2 swimming pools: Avangard and CYSS.

Be sure to visit the Honey House, a closed museum where famous beekeepers live. Here you can taste all the varieties of honey known to mankind and, of course, buy some to take home. In addition, you can go outside the city and taste new sensations.

Mukachevo monasteries are famous:
  • The Mukachevo Women's Orthodox Monastery, which has a huge library with a huge number of books;
  • Domboks'kyy Orthodox Convent;
  • The Rakoshyno Orthodox Monastery for Men.
Some locations in Mukachevo are part of well-known tourist routes, such as: Gastronomic Way, Wine Way, Honey Way of Zakarpattia. Not far from Mukachevo, there is a small village of Chynadiyovo with the castle "St. Miklos", where you should book an evening tour with torches. There is also the Schönborn Palace, located in the village of Karpaty, which is easily accessible by rail. You can visit the palaces on foot or by car. It is also convenient to choose daily tours of the castles of Transcarpathia lasting 8 hours, but you lose the opportunity to see more interesting things. For example, if you go to Chynadiyovo on your own, you can walk through the beech forest to the Skakalo waterfall from the St. Miklos Castle, and the park in front of the Schönborn Palace requires some exploring.
Extreme sports enthusiasts can book rafting or catamaran rafting on the Latorytsia or Tisza rivers. A less extreme option is a walk through Orthodox churches and monasteries: the Church of the Descent of the Holy Spirit, the Church of the Pochayiv Icon of the Mother of God, and the Mukachevo Monastery on Chernecha Hill are worth seeing.
