Yuriy Fedkovych Literary and Memorial Museum, Chernivtsi

Yuriy Fedkovych is the most prominent writer of Bukovyna, an educator of the region and an active public figure, whose name is given to the famous Chernivtsi University. If you are visiting Chernivtsi and want to learn more about the cultural past of the region, be sure to visit the literary and memorial museum of the talented native of Bukovyna, located in a house on the corner of Soborna Square and Ivan Franko Street, where the writer lived in 1885-1888.

The Yuriy Fedkovych Literary and Memorial Museum is a museum dedicated to the life and work of the classic Ukrainian writer Yuriy Fedkovych, located in Chernivtsi. It occupies the second floor of an old building, and the exposition is located in 9 halls, which are thematically divided into 2 parts - literary and memorial. The memorial rooms of the first Ukrainian society of the region "Ruska Besida", the editorial office of the newspaper "Bukovyna", and the memorial room of Yuriy Fedkovych have been recreated. The exhibition features his photographs, documents, belongings, early editions of his works, and musical instruments. Fedkovych was the first to raise his voice in protest against the anti-people policy of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. He took decisive measures to teach children in schools in their native language. To this end, he wrote and published the Primer. "A songbook for farm children". In addition, the manuscripts of the writer's works of fiction "Deserter", "Novobrachnyk", "Shipitski Berezy", "Into the Sea", etc. are exhibited. There is a memorial plaque to Yuriy Fedkovych on the house.

You will also be interested in the gallery of Ukrainian writers who were friends with Yurii Fedkovych, and their collaboration is highlighted. The museum has a collection of old postcards and handwritten works by the writer. In general, the museum is very intimate, and thanks to the work of the staff, they managed to recreate the atmosphere of that time, so everyone can feel the life and work of the outstanding native of Bukovyna.

The museum was founded in 1945 and recently celebrated its 70th anniversary in 2015. During its existence, the institution has changed several addresses. Initially, it was located in one of the halls of the Residence of the Bukovinian Metropolitans, and then it was housed in the premises of the local history museum on Kobylianska Street. It was only in 2004 that the museum finally got its own premises: the city authorities allocated one of the 6 Chernivtsi apartments where the writer once lived. By the way, this was his last home, where he actually met his death.

The museum has also heard that Yurii Fedkovych was not only a novelist and editor, but also an incredibly enthusiastic astrologer, but such facts are somehow not publicized and the horoscopes compiled by Fedkovych are not displayed in the windows. At a time when the absence of horoscopes is the only way to determine whether a publication is worth reading, this reluctance to emphasize a potentially yellow and popular topic is more than commendable.

Recently, a room honoring the memory of Yuriy Fedkovych and a room "Writers of Bukovyna - Continuers of Yuriy Fedkovych's Traditions" were opened. The museum's funds include 2438 exhibits. We invite you to join the literary heritage by visiting the museum of our famous countryman in Chernivtsi! Fans of the writer's work should also visit the Yuriy Fedkovych's estate-museum, which is located in the village of Putyla.

The museum is located at 10 Soborna Square, in the very center of the city.

Opening hours ofthe Fedkovych Museum: from 9:00 to 17:00 daily, except Monday.

Entrance fee: 9 UAH for adults, 6 and 4 UAH for students and children, respectively.
