Legends about the foundation
The first mention of Vyshniv dates back to the second half of the 17th century. According to a local legend, Vyshniv was founded by immigrants from the village of Hrabiv, which was destroyed during a Tatar raid. The place of foundation of the new village was indicated by a miraculous icon that disappeared from the Hrabiv Monastery and miraculously turned up in the forest, suspended from a cherry tree (hence the name), far from Hrabiv. A church was built on the site of the recovered icon, and a village was built around it, which was named Vyshniv.
The present-day site of Hrabiv is located in the Bushivetskyi Lis tract, 4.5 km away (geographic coordinates: 49°15' N and 24°22' E) southwest of the village of Vyshniv. The archaeological expedition of the Ivano-Frankivsk Museum of Local Lore found the foundation of a religious building, probably a monastery, numerous remains of ceramics, and traces of a settlement. Residents of the village of Vyshniv make pilgrimages to Hrabiv, believing the water from the spring there to be healing.
Versions of the foundation
According to one version, the village was founded by a Cossack Vasyl Pasichnyk (this surname is still common in Vyshniv) from Bila Tserkva. According to legend, he is buried near the village church. His great-grandson Vasyl was one of the founders of the church, built in 1776 (it has not survived to this day). According to another version, the village was founded by the boyar Vyshenia, from whose name the village derives.
